The Varsity Blues men’s tennis team defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks before falling to the McGill Redmen and York Lions in their 2011 opening weekend, September 16-18.
First year Mauricio Velit’s impressive performance led the Blues to an outstanding 6-1 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks on Friday in Oshawa, Ont.
A native of Pickering, Ont., Velit ‘s singles match resulted in an exciting 8-2 win, while his doubles match along with partner Cameron Landry (Toronto, Ont.) ended in a thrilling 8-4 victory.
Sophomores Daniel Rozin (Toronto, Ont.) and Farhaad Virjee‘s (Calgary, Alta.) won their doubles match 8-3. The duo also each won their singles matches.
Despite an admirable effort on Saturday, the Blues fell 7-0 to the McGill Redmen at U of T Scarborough Campus.
Second-year player Cyrus Elmpak-Mackie was closest to taking a point from the Redmen, dropping his singles match 6-1, 6-4.
The Blues could not recover and dropped another tough 7-0 decision to the York Lions on Sunday.
The Varsity Blues return to action on Saturday, September 24 when they face the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton, Ont.
