The Varsity Blues women’s lacrosse team went 1-1-1 to open their 2011 regular season this weekend (Sept. 17-18) at U of T’s Back Campus.
Toronto opened the weekend with a 7-7 tie versus the McMaster Marauder. Veteran midfielder Taryn Grieder and Tori Wasson (Peterborough, Ont.) tallied three goals apiece, with Susan Tung adding a single marker in the draw.
Grieder’s second hat trick of the weekend couldn’t solidify a win on Sunday morning as the Blues fell 15-12 to the Guelph Gryphons.
A native of Cobourg, Ontario, Grieder had three goals and two assists in the close game, scoring the last two goals of the game for the Blues.
Wasson had two goals and an assist, while Katie McCurdy of Orillia, Ont., finished with three goals for the Blues, all in the first half. Tung added another two goals in the game, one before the half and one after the second half resumed.
The Blues ended the weekend on a high note with a lopsided 13-5 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks.
Grieder once again led the Blues with three goals and two assists, with Wasson and McCurdy adding two each in the win.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, September 24 when they travel to Kingston to battle the Queen’s Gaels. The game starts at 10 a.m.
