The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to the Queen’s Gaels on Saturday, February 12 at Kingston Memorial Centre.
With the loss, the Blues hopes of hosting a quarter-final are gone. Toronto is now 14-11-1 with only one regular season game remaining and will finish sixth in the OUA standings.
Kingston, Ont., native and veteran forward Brenley Jorgensen opened the scoring 7:45 into the third period, with a short handed marker that beat Gaels goaltender Mel Dodd-Moher.
The Gaels responded on a powerplay opportunity with less than three minutes remaining as Shelby Aitcheson found a hole through U of T netminder Nicole Kesteris to even the score at 1-1 after regulation.
After a scoreless overtime period, the game headed into a shootout with the Gaels first two shooters scoring to solidify the come-from-behind victory.
Kesteris made 23 saves in the loss.
The Varsity Blues return to the ice tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Oshawa, Ont., to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
