NO. 2 HAWKS SNAP BLUES WIN STREAK

The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team fell 4-2 to the No. 2 Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday night (Dec. 4) at Sun Life Arena in Waterloo, Ont.

First-year forward April Looije of Mississauga, Ont., scored one goal and added one assist in the loss.  The Blues went 0-for-3 on the powerplay, while the Hawks made good on 1-of-2 attempts.

Laurier opened the scoring midway through the first and carried a one-goal lead into the second period.

The home team quickly went ahead by two with a goal off the stick of Paula Lagamba 53 seconds into the period. 

Blues assistant captain and Scarborough, Ont., native Amanda Fawns notched her fifth of the season as she got U of T on the board just over two minutes later.  Golden Hawks forward Laura Brooker added her second of the game as Laurier quickly re-established a two-goal cushion.

The Golden Hawks would add their single powerplay goal with 3:28 remaining in the second period, only to be answered by Looije 53 seconds later. 

Laurier maintained the 4-2 lead throughout a scoreless third period to come away with their ninth-straight win.

First-year Blues goaltender Krista Funke of Regina made 35 saves on the night.

The Varsity Blues head into the December break with a 7-6-1 record and tied with York for fifth place. Toronto returns to the ice on Friday, January 6 as they host the Waterloo Warriors at Varsity Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
