BLUES COMPLETE COME BACK WITH SHOOTOUT WIN

Krista Funke posted 58 saves in leading the Varsity Blues women’s hockey team to a 3-2 come-from-behind shoot out victory over the Windsor Lancers on Saturday afternoon at South Windsor Arena.

With the win, the Blues improve to 6-5-1 and sit tied for sixth place in the OUA.

Callie Bazak and Natalie Hughes both scored in the three-player shoot out to secure the victory.

Down 2-0 after the first period, the Blues battled back and got on the board 6:33 into the second with a goal off the stick of fifth-year forward Brenley Jorgensen (Kingston, Ont.).  Despite being outshot 25-10, the scored remained 2-1 heading into the third period.

Rookie forward Courtney Tougas of Thunder Bay, Ont., evened the score two minutes into the third period to force an eventual overtime period.  The Lancers outshot the Blues 5-1 in OT, with Funke denying everything that came her way.

Both Bazak and Windsor’s Candace Rapchak scored in the first round of the shoot out, with Hughes notching the game-winner.

The Varsity Blues return to the ice tomorrow afternoon as they travel to London, Ont., to take on the Western Mustangs. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
