The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team defeated the Ryerson Rams 2-0 in their 2011-12 home opener on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 9) at Varsity Arena.
The win marks Vicky Sunohara’s first as the Blues bench boss. Toronto improves to 1-1 on the season.
“The coaching staff is very happy with what we see so far,” commented Sunohara after the game. “We’ve got a lot of work to do but it’s early and we’re prepared to do it.”
The veteran line of team captain Karolina Urban, Brenley Jorgensen and Amanda Fawns accounted for both goals on the day.
After a scoreless first period, the Blues came out itching for that first goal and outshot the Rams 16-6 in the second. Jorgensen opened the scoring with just over three minutes remaining in the frame, tapping in a Fawns rebound past Ryerson goalie Emma Crawley.
The Rams battled back in the third with many chances to score, only to be denied by Blues rookie goalie Krista Funke (Regina).
Urban would pot an empty netter with 32 seconds out to secure the 2-0 victory.
Funke made 26 saves and recorded her first career shut out in the win.
The Varsity Blues return to the ice next Sunday, October 16 as they travel to Waterloo to take on the Warriors. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
