The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Western Mustangs on Saturday, October 29 at Varsity Arena.
With the loss, the Blues drop to 2-3-1, while the Mustangs improve to 3-5-0.
Western struck first with a goal off the stick of rookie forward Kendra Deller (London, Ont.) eight minutes into the game. The visiting squad maintained a 1-0 advantage after the first period of play.
Second-year forward Amanda Ricker notched what would be the Blues lone goal of the game 45 seconds into the second period on a U of T powerplay.
With the game deadlocked at 1-1, the Blues peppered Western goalie Olivia Ross with shots but could not solve the second-year Huntsville, Ont., native again.
With just over 12 minutes remaining, Western player of the game Emilie Canham received a pass in the slot from Marianne Filson and sent a one-timer into the lower right corner of the net.
Blues goaltender Krista Funke of Regina, Sask., made 22 saves in the loss.
The Varsity Blues return to the ice tomorrow afternoon as they host the Windsor Lancers at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
