The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to the Brock Badgers on Friday night (Oct. 21) at Varsity Arena.
With the loss, the Blues drop to 2-2-0 on the season, while the Badgers improve to 2-3-0.
Varsity Blues player of the game Kelly Setter had a solid chance to score 11:52 into the contest, ringing a point shot off the post. Blues rookie goalie Krista Funke made a couple huge saves in the first period to keep the game close.
The Badgers did manage to get on the board in the first 20 minutes of action with a powerplay marker. With Blues defenceman Natalie Hughes in the penalty box, Brock’s Jaclyn Conacher wired a shot off the post that hit Funke in the back and rolled into the net.
Brock came out flying in the second period and outshot the home team 22-5 in the frame. Sara Brady potted the Badgers next goal off an offensive zone face off, sending a shot through traffic that trickled through a hole to find the mesh.
Fifth-year forward Amanda Fawns of Scarborough, Ont., looked to have a sure goal with 6:40 remaining in the second period, but Brock goalie Chantal Bicket slid across the crease to preserve the shut out.
U of T was hungry in the third period, outshooting the Badgers 16-7 but could not find back of the net and dropped their second game of the season.
The Varsity Blues return to the ice tomorrow afternoon as they host the No. 5 Guelph Gryphons at Varsity Arena. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
