Box Score Sherri Pierce recorded 16 points to lead the No. 6 Varsity Blues women’s basketball team to a 66-53 win over the Laurentian Lady Vees on Saturday, January 29 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
With the win, the Blues improve to 13-4 and remain in second place, while Laurentian drops to 4-13 and sits in sixth place in the OUA East division.
Veteran guard Erin McNeely of Kingston, Ont., followed Pierce’s performance up with 14 points, while Nicki Schutz of Toronto chipped in with 11 points in the win.
The Lady Vees got out to an early lead and held onto a two-point advantage (18-16) after the first quarter. A low scoring second would see Laurentian maintain their slight lead as the visiting team was up 27-23 at halftime.
U of T rallied led by a stellar 12-point second-half effort from McNeely. The Blues outscored the Lady Vees 43-26 in the second half to come away with their sixth consecutive victory.
Katie Goggins tallied a game-high 18 points to lead the Lady Vees, while Lisa Furchner had 16 points and eight rebounds in the losing cause.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Friday, February 4 when they travel to Kingston, Ont., to take on the Queen’s Gaels. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
