BLUES HOLD ON TO BEAT WARRIORS

Brittany Kirby scored one goal and added three assists as the Varsity Blues women’s hockey team came away with a 5-3 victory over the Waterloo Warriors in their fourth annual Cheer Blue, Think Pink game on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Arena.

With the win, the Blues improve to 12-9-0 and remain in fourth place in the OUA standings.

Kirby opened the scoring just six minutes into the game, after third-year forward Callie Bazak was hauled down and the Blues were awarded a penalty shot. The Vancouver native made no mistake, deking around Waterloo netminder Martina Michaud to find the back of the net.

Veteran forward and assistant captain Amanda Fawns of Scarborough, Ont., would put the home team up by two with just 34 seconds remaining in the first period.

The Blues scored again midway through the second frame on a powerplay opportunity. Kingston, Ont., native Brenley Jorgensen finished off a nice give-and-go play with Emily Milito (Ottawa) behind the net, jumping on her own rebound to put the Blues up 3-0.

The Warriors finally got on the board just 33 seconds later as Jessica Tracey sent a weak backhand through traffic to beat Blues goaltender Melissa Muir short side.

Second-year forward Ragan Danford of Madoc, Ont., scored another powerplay marker with just four seconds remaining in the second period to put give Toronto a 4-1 lead heading into the final frame.

The Warriors gave the Blues a scare in the third, scoring two goals to bring the game within one. Rookie defenceman Kathryn Roy of Owen Sound, Ont., netted a powerplay goal four minutes into the third period, before Emma McMillan (Hastings, Ont.,) redirected her shot from the point 10 minutes later for the Warriors third goal of the game.

The Blues killed off a late penalty and held on for the win. Veteran defenceman Kelly Setter added an empty-netter to round out the 5-3 win.

The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow when they travel to Waterloo, Ont., to take on the No. 2 Laurier Golden Hawks. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
