The Varsity Blues women’s lacrosse team went 2-0 with victories over the McGill Martlets and UOIT Ridgebacks in their 2010 home openers on Saturday, September 25 at Back Campus.
The Blues defeated McGill 12-8 early on Saturday morning before dominating the Ridgebacks 18-1.
McGill opened the scoring three minutes in; however, the Blues responded with two of their own. Both teams exchanged goals throughout the remainder of the first half to leave things tied at 4-4 at the midway point of the game.
Toronto exploded with seven unanswered goals to gain a lead that would not subside. The Martlets attempted to rally but it was too little, too late as U of T earned the four-goal win.
Kristin Smart of Whitby, Ont., led the Blues with four goals and two assists, while Taryn Grieder (Cobourg, Ont.) had three goals and one assist. Breanne Gillie had two and Tory Wasson, Lisa Smid and Sarah Woodward had one apiece in the win.
The second game of the day saw 10 different goal scorers for the Blues. Wasson and Smart scored three; Gillie, Grieder, Sarah Tung and Caitlyn McCallum recorded two, while Woodward, Smid, Katie Mah and Megan Daza tallied one each.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, October 2 when they travel to Kingston, Ont., to take on the Queen’s Gaels. Game time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
