WOMEN’S HOCKEY DOMINATES WARRIORS 3-0

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team defeated the Waterloo Warriors 3-0 on Sunday, February 7 at Varsity Arena.

With the win, the Blues (13-10-2) clinch a playoff spot and are one point behind the fourth-place Guelph Gryphons. The Warriors drop to 5-16-3 and remain in ninth place in the OUA standings.

Sporting their pink jerseys in support of the University of Toronto’s Cheer Blue, Think Pink initiative, the Blues came out with energy and dominated the first period. Outshooting the Warriors 10-3, Toronto finally got on the board when second-year forward Allie White (Metcalfe, Ont.) finished off a play down low with linemates Amanda Fawns (Scarborough, Ont.) and Kelly O’Hanlon (Markham, Ont.)

After a scoreless second period, the Blues widened the gap to two as Ajax, Ont. native Lindsay Hill backhanded the puck over Waterloo netminder Erica Bridgewater’s blocker on a Toronto powerplay.

Assistant captain Emily Milito (Ottawa) would add an insurance marker midway through the period as she snapped a shot past Bridgewater off a pass from Amy Cornell (Oakville, Ont.).

Blues goaltender Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.) made 17 saves in the victory and earned her first shutout of the season. White was named the Varsity Blues player of the game for her one-goal performance.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, February 13 when they host the Brock Badgers in their last regular-season home game of 2009-10. The puck drops at 4 p.m.
