The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to the Brock Badgers on Saturday, November 27 at Varsity Arena.
With the loss, the Blues are now 8-6-0 and sit in fourth place, while the Badgers improve to 11-2-0 and remain in second in the OUA standings.
Second-year Blues forward Ragan Danford of Madoc, Ont., opened the scoring just two minutes into the game when she tipped a Bianca Mirabelli point shot over the glove of Brock goaltender Beth Clause (Hamilton, Ont.)
The Badgers perked up after that but Blues rookie goaltender Nicole Kesteris (Aurora, Ont.) came up with some big stops to keep the home squad’s 1-0 advantage after the first period.
Brock came out flying in the second and finally evened the score at the 13:09 mark when third-year defenceman Amber Wilson of Brantford, Ont., sent a booming shot from the point through traffic to beat Kesteris.
The game remained deadlocked heading into the final frame.
Toronto had a few good scoring chances early in the third, but it was Brock who would get the go-ahead goal with just under five minutes left. Veteran forward Kelly Walker sent a pass to Emily Hooper who was all alone in front of the net and one-timed it in for the game-winner.
Over a minute later, Toronto’s Brenley Jorgensen (Kingston, Ont.) had a breakaway but Clause came up with a big poke check to secure the one-goal victory.
The Varsity Blues return to the ice tomorrow afternoon as they host the Guelph Gryphons at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 4 p.m.
