BLUES GET PAST WARRIORS

The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team edged the Waterloo Warriors 5-4 on Sunday, November 14 at Columbia Ice Field in Waterloo, Ont.

With the win, the Blues improve to 6-5-0 and sit in fifth place in the OUA standings.

Ona Mezenberg opened the scoring just over a minute into the contest, but Toronto quickly responded as first-year forward Amanda Ricker of Kanata, Ont., tipped a Bianca Mirabelli point shot into the net.

The Warriors went up again just 20 seconds later with a goal off the stick of Brittany Holland. The Blues would even the score before the first period ended, with a powerplay marker from Callie Bazak, who ripped the puck into the top corner of the net.

Waterloo scored on the powerplay 51 seconds into the second period but U of T responded once again when Kingston, Ont., native Brenley Jorgensen received a pass from captain Karolina Urban and picked the top corner from the short side.

The Warriors scored once more before the second period ended and held a 4-3 lead heading into the final frame.

Jorgensen netted her second of the game just two minutes into the third period, when she made good on an Amanda Fawns rebound.

Fifth-year forward Emily Milito went on to pot the game-winner on the powerplay with just under six minutes remaining. The Ottawa native received a pass from Darby Smith on the back post and made no mistake, sliding the puck past Warriors goalie Martina Marchaud.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, November 20 as they host the Windsor Lancers at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 4 p.m.
