FAWNS NETS GAME WINNER IN WIN OVER LIONS

Amanda Fawns scored with 50 seconds remaining to lead the Varsity Blues women’s hockey team to a 3-2 victory over the York Lions on Saturday, October 30 at Canlan Ice Sports.

With the win, the Blues improve to 3-4-0 and sit in a three-way tie for fifth in the OUA standings.

After York opened the scoring on their first powerplay opportunity of the game, Blues captain Karolina Urban of Kamloops, B.C., scored her first goal of the season when she sent a backhand into the top corner from a scramble in front of the net.

Still deadlocked at the midway point of the game, the Lions went ahead with a shorthanded marker off the stick of Katie Ippolito at the 14:05 minute mark of the second period.

The Blues responded just over two minutes later when first-year forward Amanda Ricker of Kanata, Ont., tipped a Mary-Claire Geneau (Victoria) point shot through traffic and into the net.

The game remained tied at 2-2 throughout the majority of the third period until the dying minutes when the Blues crashed the net. A native of Scarborough, Ont., Fawns made no mistake, shooting a loose puck in front past York goaltender Sydney Brown for the game-winner.

Rookie goaltender Nicole Kesteris had a phenomenal game in net, making 34 saves in the victory.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, November 6 when they host the Queen’s Gaels at Varsity Arena. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
