MILITO NETS TWO, BLUES DOWN MUSTANGS

Emily Milito scored two goals to lead the Varsity Blues women’s hockey team to a 3-2 victory over the Western Mustangs on Saturday, October 23 at Varsity Arena.

With the win, the Blues improve to 2-3-0 and sit in sixth place in the OUA standings.

U of T got out to a great start and outshot the Mustangs 15-7 in the first period of play; However, Western would strike first as Marianne Filson buried a loose puck in front of the net on their first powerplay opportunity of the game.

Fourth-year Blues forward Amanda Fawns of Scarborough, Ont., answered back, potting her first goal of the season at the 11:41 mark, assisted by Amanda Ricker and Kelly Setter, to even the score at 1-1 after the first 20 minutes of action.

Milito scored three minutes into the second frame on a powerplay to put the Blues up 2-1. The Ottawa native added her second of the game midway through the third period, a short-handed marker, when she skated in from the high slot and backhanded a loose puck over the glove of Mustangs goaltender Jessica Ulrich.

With their goalie pulled and a Varsity Blue in the penalty box, Western’s Sydney Kidd put one past Toronto goalie Nicole Kesteris with three seconds remaining, but it was too little, too late as the Blues skated away with the 3-2 victory.

The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow when they host the Windsor Lancers at Varsity Arena. Game time is 4 p.m.
