FIELD HOCKEY FALLS TO DEFENDING CHAMPS

Natalie Provenzano scored two goals as the Varsity Blues field hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, October 2 in Ottawa. The Blues went on to defeat McGill 2-1 in the second game of the day.

A native of Richmond Hill, Ont., Provenzano opened the scoring late in the first half on a stroke goal. Guelph responded with three unanswered goals over the next 20 minutes to build a lead that would not subside. The Gryphons were ruthless in the circle and finished their chances, while Toronto struggled to find the back of the net on their chances.

In the 65th minute, Provenzano notched her second goal of the day on a reverse shot, only to be answered back by the Gryphons to round out the 4-2 loss.

Alex Thicke of North Vancouver, B.C., got U of T on the board 15 minutes into the game versus McGill. Yvonne Langen (Cambridge, Ont.) added another in the 54th minute before McGill’s Camille St-Cyr spoiled the shut out seven minutes later.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Friday, October 8 when they travel to Kingston, Ont. to take on the McGill Martlets and Carleton Ravens. Game times are 11:45 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.
