BLUES GO 1-1 AT VARSITY CENTRE

The Varsity Blues women’s lacrosse team fell to the Western Mustangs 13-9 before coming away with a 15-9 victory over the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday, October 17 at Varsity Centre.

Western got out to a quick 3-0 lead before fifth-year midfielder Tori Wasson of Peterborough, Ont., got the Blues on the board. Toronto and Western exchanged goals throughout the middle of the first half and the Mustangs went on to score three in the last five minutes to build an 8-4 lead at the midway point of the game.

Wasson led a Toronto rally in the opening minutes of the second half, scoring two goals 46 seconds apart. Taryn Grieder of Cobourg, Ont., notched another as Toronto closed the gap to one with 21 minutes remaining.

The Mustangs came back led by Betty Turowec’s three second-half goals to take the lead for good. Despite their best efforts and two late goals by third-year attacker and Peterborough native Susan Tung, the Blues could not complete the comeback and fell 15-9.

Wasson and Tung each recorded hat tricks, while Breanne Gillie (Hamilton, Ont.) scored two and Grider had one in the loss.

Grieder tallied three goals in both the first and second half to lead the Blues to a six-goal lead over the Gryphons in the second game of the day.

Grider’s six-goal performance led U of T, while Tung, Megan Daza of Orangeville, Ont., and Whitby, Ont., native Kristin Smart tallied two apiece. Wasson, and Toronto native Sarah Woodward and Caitlin McCallum had single tallies in the win.

The Varsity Blues return to the field next Saturday, October 23 when they travel to Guelph, Ont. to take on the Western Mustangs. Game time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
