The Varsity Blues men’s basketball team defeated the Regina Cougars 100-79 in a non-conference game held in front of a capacity crowd at Estevan Comprehensive School in Estevan, Sask.
The Varsity Blues took the lead during an 11-0 run late in the second quarter and never looked back, outscoring the Cougars by a 21-9 margin in the second and putting up 34 points in the third to open up a big lead.
This came after a strong start by the Cougars, who actually led by as many as 14 points early in the contest before Toronto found its groove.
Second-year forward Alex Hill had a game-high 18 points for Toronto in the win, and also led all players with four assists. Drazen Glisic had 16 points and piled up 16 rebounds for the Varsity Blues, while Matt Savel (15), Sean Nickel (11), and Ben Garvin (10) also scored in double digits for Toronto.
First-year post Matt Campbell had a team-high 14 points for the Cougars in just 19 minutes on the floor, while Jeff Lukomski and Paul Gareau both chipped in with 12.
Both teams struggled from three-point range, as Toronto was 5-for-23 from the land beyond and the Cougars were 3-for-24. Turnovers were costly for Regina, as the Cougars had 30 to Toronto’s 16.
The two teams will meet again on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport in Regina.
