WOMEN’S HOCKEY FALLS TO LANCERS 3-1

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team came up short against the Windsor Lancers, dropping a 3-1 decision on Saturday, January 30 at South Windsor Arena.

With the loss, the Blues drop to 11-9-2 and sit in fifth place, while the Lancers are in eighth place in the OUA standings with a 9-13-0 record.

Despite outshooting the Lancers 11-7 through the first frame, the Blues were unable to find the net until the 3:57 mark of the second. Third-year forward Brenley Jorgensen (Kingston, Ont.) finished off a passing play with linemates Karolina Uraban (Kamloops, B.C.) and Lindsay Hill (Ajax, Ont.) for what would be Toronto’s only goal of the contest.

The Lancers quickly answered back just three minutes later with a breakaway goal from Manon Davis.

Less than a minute later, Candace Rapchak tallied the eventual game-winner to give the home team a 2-1 lead at the midway points of the game.

The Blues began to rally in the third, however Windsor goaltender Jamie Tessier shut the door, making 13 saves to maintain the one-goal advantage.

Julie Hamilton added an insurance marker with just over one minute remaining to secure the 3-1 victory.

U of T goaltender Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.) made 33 saves in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow afternoon (Jan. 31) when they travel to London, Ont. to take on the Western Mustangs. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
