BLUES CAN'T KEEP UP WITH SOARING RAVENS, FALL 73-55

The Varsity Blues women’s basketball team fell 73-55 to the Carleton Ravens on Friday, January 29 at the Ravens Nest in Ottawa, Ont.

The loss drops the Blues record to 7-10, while Carleton remains atop the OUA East standings with a mark of 13-4.

It was a tale of two halves for the Blues who came out and stunned the host in the first two quarters, outscoring the Ravens 15-10 in the first and 19-17 in the second to take a 34-27 lead into halftime.

The top-seeded Ravens came roaring back in the third and took it to the Blues, knocking down 20 third-quarter points to the Blues 12. It went from bad to worse for Toronto in the final 10 minutes of play as Carleton made a strong statement with 26 points in the frame.

Three players were in double figures for the Varsity Blues, who as a team shot 35% from the floor and only 60% (17-of-28) from the free throw line.

First-year guard Katelyn McConnell of Whitby, Ont. led the Blues with a season-high 14 points. The team’s leading scorer Nicki Schutz (Toronto) netted 12, while Kingston, Ont. native Erin McNeely added 11 in a losing cause. McNeely led the squad in six rebounds.

Ottawa also had multiple players in double digits. Ashleigh Cleary (Kemptville, Ont.) led the way with 14 points, Brockville, Ont. native Kendall MacLeod tallied 13, while Alyson Bush of Ottawa and Jessica Resch of Orleans, Ont. has 11 and 10 points respectively.

U of T is back on the court tomorrow night when they take on the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Montpetit Hall. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
