Kaley Powers scored the lone goal as the No. 2 Laurier Golden Hawks edged the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team 1-0 on Sunday, January 10 at Sun Life Arena.
The Blues are now 8-7-2 and remain in fifth place in the OUA standings.
Toronto got off to a slow start and Laurier took control, outshooting the Blues 15-5 in the first period.
A third-year forward, Powers (Kingston, Ont.) picked up a Fiona Lester (Peterborough, Ont.) rebound in front of the net and sent a shot past Blues goaltender Kendyl Valenta’s (Brampton, Ont.) blocker just 6:33 into the game.
U of T picked up the pace in the second and third period but despite some good scoring opportunities, could not solve Golden Hawks goaltender Liz Knox (Stoufville, Ont.).
Valenta stood on her head, posting 37 saves to keep the Blues within reach throughout the entire game.
Both Laurier and Toronto were 0-5 on the powerplay.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, January 16 when they host the UOIT Ridgebacks at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 4 p.m.
