The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s tennis team fell 5-2 to the Western Mustangs on Saturday, September 19 at the Western Tennis Centre in London, Ont.

The Blues number one doubles team of Roxana Soica and Aisha Bhimla (Toronto) defeated Western’s Paige Robinson and Emma Lecavalier 8-6 in the first match of the morning. However, the Blues number two and three doubles teams dropped their matches to give the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage heading into singles action.

Second-year standout Daria Zakharchenko (Sochi, RUS) easily defeated Robinson 6-2, 6-4 to take the number one match. Soica (Toronto) earned her second win of the day in a close 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 win over Western’s number two Chantal Forristal.

Unfortunately, Toronto fell in their remaining singles matches as the Mustangs came away with the 5-2.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, September 26 when they travel to Oshawa, Ont. to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks. Matches are set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
