The defending OUA champion Varsity Blues men’s tennis team were handed their first loss of the season as the Western Mustangs came away with a 5-2 victory on Saturday, September 19 at the Western Tennis Centre in London, Ont.
Stefan Srnic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Arren Skandarajah’s (Toronto) defeated Riley Horne and Mark Guevarra 8-6 in the number one doubles contest.
The Blues dropped both the number two and three doubles matches 8-4 as Western took a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Srnic and Skandarajah each recorded their second victories of the day in singles action. Srnic defeated Western’s Thomas Young, 7-5, 6-3, in the number one singles match, while Skandarajah edged Mustangs number three David Andrade 6-2, 5-7, 7-6.
Toronto native Chris Ma dropped a close 2-6, 7-5, 6-7 decision in the number two game, while Andrei Melchisedec (Toronto) dropped the number four match 6-4, 6-4. Aamer Javed (Toronto) struggled in the number five match, falling 6-3, 6-0 and Cameron Starratt (Bedford, N.S.) dropped a close 7-6 set before losing 6-3 in the second of the number six match.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, September 26 when they travel to Oshawa, Ont. to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks. Matches are set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
