GOLDEN HAWKS GET PAST BLUES

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s rugby team fell to the Laurier Golden Hawks 64-12 on Saturday, September 19 at University of Toronto Scarborough Campus.

Down 3-0, the Blues took advantage of a Laurier turnover and counter-attacked, as first-year Ricardo Gibson (Maho Bay, Virgin Islands) chased down his kicked ball and dove on it for a try. Alex Dwhytie (Etobicoke, Ont.) made the convert to give the Blues a 7-3 advantage.

The Blues lead diminished in the last eight minutes of the first half as the Golden Hawks scored three converted tries to go up 31-7 at intermission.

Laurier took charge in the second half and widened the gap considerably. However, the Blues scored their second try of the afternoon on a great individual effort by Moe Mahdi as he broke free up the middle and fended off two Golden Hawks defenders to score a 30-yard try.

The Varsity Blues return to the field on Saturday, October 3 when they travel to Kingston, Ont. to take on the RMC Paladins. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
