The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s lacrosse team fell 13-9 to the Carleton Ravens in their first game of the regular season on Saturday, September 19 at Trent University Stadium.
Veterans Michael Chullen (Toronto) and Andrei Bruno (Toronto) opened up the scoring with two goals for the Blues in the first nine minutes of the game. However, the Ravens would respond with two goals of their own to tie things up at 2-2 after the first quarter.
Third-year attacker Will Dunlop (Toronto) got the Blues back on track, tallying two goals in the first three minutes of the second quarter. Carleton rallied once again and countered with two markers to even the game before the half expired.
The Ravens dominated the first ten minutes of the third quarter with four unanswered goals. Ryan Instrum (South Hadley, Mass.) and first-year engineering student Marc Anthony Koukoulas (Boston, Mass.) attempted to get the Blues back on track with one and two goals, respectively, but Carleton kept pace and held a 10-7 lead heading into the final frame.
The Ravens opened up the fourth quarter with two early goals less than a minute apart and despite another goal apiece from Dunlop and Chullen, Toronto was unable to complete the comeback.
Chullen led the Blues with three goals and two assists and Dunlop recorded a hat trick. Bruno, Instrum and Koukoulas all had two points in the loss.
Shane Davidson (Whitby, Ont.) and Corey Fowler (Niagara On The Lake, Ont.) led the Ravens with six points each, while Tim Bergin (Toronto) had five.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow when they host the McGill Redmen at the University of Toronto’s Back Campus. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
