The University of Toronto Varsity Blues defending OUA champion men’s tennis team picked up where they left off in 2008 with a 5-2 victory over the Montreal Carabins on Saturday, September 12 at York University
The Blues opened the day winning their number one and number two doubles matches in tiebreakers. Toronto’s number one doubles team of Arren Skandarajah (Toronto) and Stefan Srnuc won their tiebreaker 9-7, while number two Chris Ma and Andrei Melchisedec (Toronto) took theirs 7-4 to earn the lone doubles point* going into singles play.
Srnuc went on to defeat Montreal’s number one 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, while Ma handily won the number three match 6-1, 6-3. Melchisedec secured the victory with his second tiebreaker victory of the day, with a 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5) in the number 4 spot. Aamer Javed (Toronto) also came from behind to win the number five match 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow (Sept. 13) when they travel to take on the McMaster Marauders at Stoney Creek Tennis Club. Matches are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
