The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team fell 5-1 to the Queen’s Gaels on Sunday, February 8 at Kingston Memorial Centre.
Special teams would be the difference in this game - Queen’s went 3-for-6 with the man advantage and Toronto was unable to convert on their four powerplay opportunities.
The Blues found themselves down by three at the midway point of the game with a Gaels powerplay goal from Victoria Kaufmann (Whitby, Ont.), an even strength goal from Elizabeth Kench (Gananoque, Ont.) and a short-handed marker from Kristin Smith (Toronto).
Toronto finally got on the board when Brenley Jorgensen (Kingston, Ont.) and Lyndsey Ryan (Ajax, Ont.) set up first-year forward Stacey Oue (Scarborough, Ont.) for what would be the Blues lone goal of the game.
Despite their efforts, Toronto got into some penalty trouble in the third period and Queen’s took advantage, adding two insurance goals, on the powerplay, to secure the 5-1 victory.
With the loss, the Blues sit in third place in the OUA with a 15-8-0-1 record, three points behind the second-place Gryphons.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, February 14 as they host the UOIT Ridgebacks at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 4 p.m.
