Lindsay Hill scored with 19 seconds to go in the gameas the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team defeated the Queen’s Gaels 3-2 on Saturday, February 7 at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
Queen’s jumped to the early lead when Kelsey Thompson (Martintown, Ont.) notched her 15th goal of the season on their first powerplay opportunity.
Second-year forward Darby Smith (Madoc, Ont.) tied things up for Toronto at the midway point of the second period. Blues captain Lyndsey Ryan (Ajax, Ont.) skated down the wing and sent a beautiful pass to Smith who directed it through the legs of Gaels goaltender Karissa Savage (Calgary, Alta.).
The game was tied 1-1 heading into the final frame.
The play went back and forth throughout the third period until first-year forward Kristin Smith (Toronto) scored to put the Gaels up by one with less than ten minutes remaining.
With 6:45 to go, Blues leading scorer Annie DelGuidice (Hamilton, Ont.) shot the puck on goal and linemate Emily Milito (Ottawa) was there to pick up the rebound and put it in the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2.
After both Queen’s and Toronto took a timeout, Hill secured the win as she picked up the puck and drove down the wing, firing a shot at Savage and skating hard to the net to bury her own rebound.
Blues goaltender Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.) made 26 saves in the victory.
The Varsity Blues complete their doubleheader with the Gaels tomorrow afternoon at the Kingston Memorial Centre. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
