WOMEN’S HOCKEY EDGES LANCERS 3-2

Second-year defenceman Allie White scored one goal and added one assist as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team defeated the Windsor Lancers 3-2 on Saturday, December 5 at Varsity Arena.

With the win, the Varsity Blues improve their record to 6-5-1 and sit tied for fifth place with the Western Mustangs.

After a scoreless first period, the Blues opened the scoring White (Metcalfe, Ont.) sent a high shot from the point that trickled past Windsor goaltender Jamie Tessier (Copper Cliff, Ont.) and into the net.

U of T held a 1-0 lead after two periods of play.

7:47 into the third period fourth-year forward Emily Milito (Ottawa, Ont.) tipped White’s point shot between Tessier’s legs to put the Blues up by two.

Just over two minutes later, Windsor finally got on the board when Julie Hamilton (Lucknow, Ont.) buried a Jodilyn Brown (Corunna, Ont.) rebound on the powerplay to put the game within reach.

With just under six minutes remaining, the Lancers would even the score as second-year defenceman Laurel Ansell (Uxbridge, Ont.) sent a low shot through traffic past Blues goaltender Melissa Muir (Winnipeg, Man.).

Toronto did not give up hope and would score the eventual game-winner two minutes later. Fifth-year veteran Annie DelGuidice (Hamilton, Ont.) put forth a solid individual effort to drive the puck towards the net and Brenley Jorgensen (Kingston, Ont.) was there to tap in the rebound.

White was named the Varsity Blues player of the game for her two-point performance in the win.

The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow night when they host the Western Mustangs at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 6 p.m.
