WOMEN’S HOCKEY DEFEATS BADGERS 5-1

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team defeated the Brock Badgers 5-1 on Saturday, November 7 at Seymour-Hannah Centre in St. Catharines, Ont.

First-year goaltender Melissa Muir (Winnipeg, Man.) was solid for the Blues all day, making 12 saves in the victory.

Third-year forward Lindsay Hill (Ajax, Ont.) opened the scoring 8:59 into the game as she whacked in her own rebound on the powerplay to give the Blues a 1-0 lead.

Toronto wouldn’t find the back of the net again until the second period when fifth-year veteran Annie Del Guidice (Hamilton, Ont.) blocked a shot on the penalty kill and skated down the ice on a breakaway, deking out Brock goaltender Beth Clause to put the Blues up by two.

Blues captain Karolina Urban (Kamloops, B.C.) extended Toronto’s lead to three with just five seconds remaining in the second period when she picked up a loose puck in the high slot and wired a shot into the top corner of the net.

U of T dominated the entire second period, outshooting the Badgers 13-0.

U of T ran into some penalty trouble in the third and Brock finally took advantage when Emily Hooper found a hole to beat Muir and get her squad on the board.

With Clause out of the Badgers net, Hill added her second goal of the game, an empty-netter, with just over one minute remaining.

First-year standout Alie Brind’Amour McClure scored a late tally, also blocking a shot at the blue line for a breakaway. The Waterdown, Ont. native made no mistake, pulling a nifty move to beat Clause and sent a backhand into the bottom left corner of the net.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, November 14 when they travel to Kingston, Ont. to take on the Queen’s Gaels. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
