MEDRI LEADS BLUES TO VICTORY OVER GOLDEN HAWKS

Joanna Medri was named Varsity Blues player of the game and raked in a game-high 15 points as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 66-55 on Friday, November 6 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. 

The Golden Hawks came out strong, taking an early eight-point lead. The Blues rallied to bring the game within two as Laurier held a slight 10-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter. 

Laurier increased their advantage at the beginning of the second quarter, gaining a 16-11 lead over the Blues nine minutes in. Toronto then rebounded with an amazing 11-point streak led by Erin McNeely (Kingston, Ont.) and Robyn Frashler (Vancouver, B.C.). 

The Hawks managed to regain some ground nearing half-time, but Medri managed to shoot an impressive three pointer to give the Blues a 25-21 lead.

Both teams exchanged points in the third quarter and Laurier managed to gain a slight 43-42 advantage heading into the final frame. 

The score remained tight until the dying minutes of the fourth. Toronto then snatched possession of the ball and landed some impressive shots, taking a decisive lead and the game 66-55. 

Medri totalled an impressive 15 points for the Blues, while McNeely and Fashler and Nicki Schutz (Toronto) followed suit behind with 10 points apiece. 

Alena Luciani (Oakville, Ont.) and Brkic were the high scorers for Laurier with 11 points each. Renata Adamczyk (Greensville, Ont.) also notably scored 8 points. 

The Varsity Blues return to the court tomorrow night (Nov. 7) as they host the Waterloo Warriors at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. The game is scheduled for 8 p.m.
