It what was another epic battle, the Varsity Blues women’s water polo team fell just shy of a second consecutive gold medal, losing 6-5 to their rivals the Carleton Ravens to claim the silver medal at the 2009 OUA championship on Sunday, November 28 at McMaster’s Ivor Wynne Centre Pool.
The Varsity Blues defeated the Ravens in last year’s final to earn their third title in school history. Carleton in turn, regains the title they held in 2007 and their third in past four years.
Toronto got the final game after defeated the host Marauders 11-6 on Saturday evening, while Carleton downed the No. 4 Queen’s Gaels 19-2 in semifinal number one.
Blues rookie sensation Casey Pottier netted two of her team’s five goals. The Kitchener native was named an OUA all-star in her first year and was the league’s third leading scorer throughout the regular season.
Leading the league in goals scored since her rookie season in 2007, Nicole Brown of Burlington, Ont. added one, as did Laura Shaw (Vancouver) and Danielle Zanardo (Toronto) to round out the

Pottier started the weekend off with three goals on Saturday versus McMaster to lead the Blues, while Brown and Shaw had two apiece.
