The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team fell 7-2 to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, November 28 at Gryphon Centre Arena.
With the loss, the Blues are 4-6-1 and sit tied for seventh in the OUA.
The Gryphons scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of action off the sticks of Leslie Taylor (Mindemoya, Ont.), Tayne Hewer (Barrie, Ont.) and Tori Woods (Orangeville, Ont.) and maintained a 3-0 lead heading into the second period.
Guelph continued to dominate throughout the second frame, holding the Blues to a mere five shots.
Woods would tally two powerplay markers two minutes apart to secure a hat trick performance. Dayna Kanis (Georgetown, Ont.) and Jessica Zerafa (Mississauga, Ont.) rounded out the Gryphons goal scorers as the home team held a 7-0 advantage after two periods of play.
Toronto came out flying in the third period and would break the shut out when fourth-year forward Emily Milito (Ottawa) fought through a scramble in front of the net to put the puck past Gryphons goaltender Chelsea Roy (Bathurst, Ont.) and get the Blues on the board.
U of T continued to pressure throughout the final frame, outshooting the Gryphons 11-2. Toronto captain Karolina Urban (Kamloops, B.C.) scored and unassisted shorthanded goal for what would be the last goal of the game midway through the period.
Despite the late effort, the Blues were unable to overcome the deficit and fell 7-2.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow (Nov. 29) as they travel to St. Catharines, Ont. to take on the Brock Badgers. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
