BLUES BASKETBALL RETURNS HOME THIS WEEKEND

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s and women’s basketball teams return home this weekend and host the Windsor Lancers and Western Mustangs at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.

The Blues take on the Lancers on Friday, Nov. 27 and the Mustangs on Saturday, Nov. 28. The women are scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m., with the men to follow at 8 p.m. both days. All four games can be watched live on the Sports Streaming Network (SSN) through www.varsityblues.ca

The No. 6 Varsity Blues men’s team are 4-2 to start the 2009-10 season and sit tied with the Ottawa Gee-Gees for second place in the OUA East division. Toronto is coming off two big road wins over Brock (68-62) and Guelph (64-61) last weekend.

Fifth-year guard Rob Paris (St. Catharines, Ont.) leads the Blues and is ranked 11th in the OUA, averaging 16.75 points per game. Fellow veteran Nick Magalas (Burlington, Ont.) is 14th in the province with 15.33 points per game and was named the Varsity Blues athlete of the week (Nov. 16-22) for his combined 29-point performance against the Badgers and Gryphons.

Six-foot-six forward Drazen Glisic (Sarajevo, BIH) is proving to be a big presence around the basket this season and is ranked third in the OUA, averaging 10 boards per game.

The Blues women’s team is also 4-2 and sit in a four-way tie for second place in the competitive OUA East. Toronto went 1-1 on the road last weekend (Nov. 20-21), falling to the Brock Badgers on Friday and bouncing back to defeat the Guelph Gryphons 68-60 on Saturday.

2008-09 OUA all-star Nicki Schutz leads the Blues and is ranked second in the conference, averaging 18.17 points per game. The Toronto, Ont. native is also ranked seventh in the province with 9.83 boards per game. Third-year forward Megan Stoncius (Mississauga, Ont.) holds the top free-throw percentage in the OUA (87.5%).
