WOMEN’S HOCKEY DROPS OVERTIME DECISION TO GAELS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team blew a 5-1 lead as the No. 7 Queen’s Gaels came from behind to win 6-5 in overtime on Saturday, November 14 at Kingston Memorial Centre.

Becky Conroy (Pembroke, Ont.) opened the scoring midway through the first period on a Queen’s powerplay. Varsity Blues assistant captain Emily Milito (Ottawa) answered back for the Blues six minutes later to tie the game 1-1 heading into the second frame.

Toronto opened the flood gates in the second period as forwards Brenley Jorgensen (Kingston, Ont.) and Courtney Brind’Amour McClure (Waterdown, Ont.) scored even strength markers. Blues leading scorer Annie Del Guidice (Hamilton, Ont.) went on to tally a short-handed goal and Lindsay Hill (Ajax, Ont.) scored on the powerplay as the Blues held a 5-1 lead at the midway point of the game.

The Gaels were able to narrow the gap to two before the second period buzzer would sound with goals off the sticks of Kristen Smith (Toronto) and Conroy.

Kelsey Thompson (Martintown, Ont.) carried that momentum over for Queen’s, scoring 53 seconds into the final frame. Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) would even the score with 14 minutes remaining and neither team would find the back of the net again as overtime was needed.

The Gaels continued to out play the Blues in the extra minutes, outshooting Toronto 5-2 in the process. With just 32 seconds remaining, Thompson would tally her second goal of the day to secure the comeback victory for the Gaels.

The Varsity Blues will look to bounce back tomorrow (Nov. 15) as they travel to Oshawa, Ont. to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
