The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team fell 6-0 to the No. 2 Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, October 31 at Varsity Arena.
Second-year forward Vanessa Schabkar (Etobicoke, Ont.) opened the scoring 3:44 into the game, picking off a Toronto pass and sending the puck into the top corner of the net.
Less than four minutes later Paula Lagamba (Toronto) buried a rebound in the Blues crease to increase Laurier’s lead to two. Teammate Caitlyn Muirhead (Waterloo, Ont.) would tally a shorthanded marker at the 12:40 mark, picking up her own rebound to beat Toronto goaltender Shayna Moor (Blenheim, Ont.).
Fourth-year veteran Laura Bartolini (Mississauga, Ont.) rounded out the first period with a wrap around goal to give the Golden Hawks a 4-0 lead.
Toronto picked up the pace throughout the rest of the game, recording numerous scoring chances but were unable to put one past Laurier goaltender Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont.).
Katherine Shirriff (Carrying Place, Ont.) scored the lone goal in the second period, taking a pass from teammate Kaley Powers (Kingston, Ont.) and shooting the puck over the glove of Blues goaltender Melissa Muir (Winnipeg, Man.).
Brittany Crago (Stouffville, Ont.) added an insurance marker 4:33 into the third period and the Blues were unable to spoil the shut out and fell 6-0.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, November 7 as they travel to St. Catharines, Ont. to take on the Brock Badgers. The puck drops at 3 p.m.
