The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s rugby team narrowly fell 22-20 to the RMC Paladins on Saturday, October 3 in Kingston, Ont.
The Blues found themselves down 7-0 after a RMC try and conversion, however Robin Kennedy (Nairobi, Kenya) finished a good passing play to get the Blues on the board. Benny Mak (Hong Kong) kicked the conversion to tie things up at 7-7.
Mak continued his scoring ways, kicking two penalty goals to put the Blues up 13-7. However, the Paladins would counter with another try.
Second-year economics student Theo Pui (Toronto) broke through a RMC tackle to run 20 metres and score for the Blues.
Mak would make the conversion and Toronto held a 20-12 lead at halftime.
RMC came out flying in the second half with an impressive 20 metre drive for another unconverted try.
As the end of the game neared, the Blues fought hard to defend against a continuous RMC attack inside the 22, however, the Paladins found a way through the line to take the 22-20 lead that would last through the rest of the game.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Friday, October 9 when they host the Western Mustangs at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
