WOMEN’S HOCKEY LANCED BY WINDSOR

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team fell 7-4 to the Windsor Lancers on Sunday, October 25 at South Windsor Arena.

After a scoreless first period, Windsor finally opened up the scoring with three goals, one on the powerplay and two at even strength, in the first eight minutes of the second frame.

The Blues finally got on the board when fifth-year defenceman Amy Cornell (Oakville, Ont.) sent a pass to Lindsay Hill (Ajax, Ont.) who wired a shot into the top corner of the net.

The Lancers responded just over five minutes later when Manon Davis tallied her second goal of the day on a powerplay opportunity. Windsor held a 4-1 lead heading into the final frame.

Third-year Blues forward Brenley Jorgensen (Kingston, Ont.) narrowed the gap to two, finishing off a low passing play with linemate Annie Del Guidice (Hamilton, Ont.) 5:24 into the third period. However the Lancers answered back as Manon secured her hat trick performance to once again gain a three-goal cushion.

Windsor would add another goal before Hill tallied her second goal of the game in a great effort down low. The Lancers scored on a late powerplay to build a 7-3 lead but fourth-year forward Darby Smith (Madoc, Ont.) put forth a solid individual effort, deking through the Windsor defencemen to find the back of the net with less than a minute remaining.

Blues starting goaltender Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.) left the game 1:20 into the second period due to injury. Back up Melissa Muir (Winnipeg, Man.) held her own between the pipes, making 19 saves over two periods of play.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, October 31 as they host the OUA defending champion Laurier Golden Hawks at Varsity Arena. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
