BLUES FALL 1-0 IN CLOSE TILT

In a fight for playoff positioning, the Varsity Blues women’s hockey team fell just short on Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 to the No. 3 Laurier Golden Hawks at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.

First-year goaltender Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.) stood on her head through the first two periods to keep the five-time OUA champions off the scoreboard.

On the afternoon, Valenta stopped 32-33 shots fired on net with the only goal coming in the opening minutes of the third period when left winger Kaley Powers (Kingston, Ont.) buried the game-winning goal behind the Blues netminder.

Toronto was held scoreless for only the second time this season – the first time was a 2-0 loss to the Golden Hawks on November 22nd.

They went 0-for-4 on the powerplay and could not get anything past the OUA’s top goaltender, Liz Knox (Stoufville, Ont.), who stopped all 14 shots she faced.

The Blues are back at home tomorrow evening (Feb. 1) and host the visiting Waterloo Warriors. The puck drops at 7:30 at Varsity Arena.
