BLUES DOWN LANCERS 3-1

The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team got two powerplay goals in the first period, which proved to be all they needed as they defeated the visiting Windsor Lancers, 3-1, on Sunday, January 25 at Varsity Arena.

Blues second-year forward Karolina Urban (Kamloops, B.C.) open the scoring with her eighth goal of the season midway through the first period to give the home team the early lead.

With less than 30 seconds remaining in Toronto’s fourth powerplay of the opening 20 minutes, forward Brenley Jorgensen (Kingston, Ont.) fed a pass to linemate Darby Smith (Madoc, Ont.) who buried what would be the eventually game-winner.

Manon Davis (Sudbury, Ont.) would get the Lancers back in game with less than five minutes to go in the second period when the winger beat Blues goalie Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.) for her fourth goal of the year.

At 13:42 of the final period, Jorgensen would collect her second point of the night and put this game away for Toronto when she beat Lancers goalie Jamie Tessier (Copper Cliff, Ont.), giving the Blues a two-goal lead they would not relinquish.

With the win, Toronto remains in third place in the OUA, three points ahead of the fourth-place York Lions. The Blues face No. 2 Laurier Golden Hawks in Kitchener this Saturday, Jan. 31st at 3 p.m., and return home on Sunday, Feb. 1st to take on the visiting Waterloo Warriors. Game time Sunday is set for 7:30 p.m.
