Three first-year Varsity Blues scored as the University of Toronto women’s hockey team defeated the Western Mustangs 4-1 on Saturday, January 24 at Varsity Arena.
First-year Blues forward Stacey Oue (Scarborough, Ont.) opened up the scoring when she capitalized on an Annie DelGuidice (Hamilton, Ont.) rebound three minutes into the first period.
Rookie defenceman Sarah Stephen (Pickering, Ont.) tallied the Blues next goal, burying another rebound off a Kelly Setter (Keswick, Ont.) point shot with six minutes remaining in the period.
Ellie Seedhouse (Whitby, Ont.) rallied her squad to score what would be Western’s only goal when she roofed a wide-open rebound off the back door on a Mustangs powerplay opportunity.
The Blues held a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period.
After a scoreless second period, the Blues came out on fire in the final frame and it quickly paid off. First-year forward Allie White (Metcalfe, Ont.) recorded her first university career goal, sending a booming wrist shot into the top corner of the net.
Eight seconds later, Stephen skated over the blue line and sent a low shot through a screen that beat Mustangs goaltender Jessica Ulrich (Keswick, Ont.) for her second goal of the game.
Setter picked up two assists and first-year goaltender Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.) recorded 24 saves in the 4-1 Blues victory.
The Varsity Blues return home tomorrow night as they host the Windsor Lancers at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 5 p.m.
