BLUES GO 0-2 IN MONTREAL

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s lacrosse team went 0-2 in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association (CUFLA) action this weekend (Sept. 20-21), falling 13-7 to Bishops Gaiters and 9-3 to the McGill Redmen.

On Saturday, Bishops got on board first as Jackson Gair beat Toronto goalie Angus Dineley (Toronto, Ont) early in the first quarter. The Blues answered back with two quick goals by Toronto natives Daniel Fleming and Mikael Chullen. Bishops tallied their second goal at the end of the first quarter, leaving the score tied at 2-2.

The Blues had a lapse in play, allowing the Gaiters to score eight goals in a row.

Toronto made a valiant attempt to rally in the third quarter as Will Dunlop (Windsor, Ont.) and Fleming scored for the Blues, however Bishops answered back with three goals of their own and the Blues were down 11-4 going into the fourth quarter.

Despite their best efforts, one quarter of bad play resulted in a 13-7 loss against a strong Bishops squad.

On Sunday, the Varsity Blues fell to the McGill Redmen 9-3 at Forbes Field in Montreal.

Toronto dominated the first half by being patient in the offensive end and receiving tremendous defensive effort from Dineley and long poles Anthio Yuen (Vancouver, B.C.), Kiel Nizich (Toronto, Ont.) and Mike Ayotte (Peterborough, Ont.). The Blues built a 3-0 lead with goals from Nick Reed (Toronto, Ont.), Andrei Bruno (Toronto, Ont.) and Dunlop.

This would be it for the Blues offence as the Redmen took over in the second half, scoring five unanswered goals in the third quarter and four goals in the fourth.

The Varsity Blues return to Toronto this Saturday, September 27 when they host the Trent Excalibur at 1 p.m. at University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus field.
