BLUES MAUL LIONS 58-7, RECLAIM ARGO CUP

Hamilton
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team defeated the York Lions 58-7, claiming their first Argo Cup in 12 years in the 37th annual Red and Blue Bowl on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Centre.

Varsity Blues quarterback David Hamilton (Mississauga, Ont.) connected with teammate Mark Stinson (Calgary, Alta.) for two touchdowns in the first seven minutes of the game, including a 79-yard toss-and-catch.

“Our seniors played well, in particular, Hamilton and Stinson,” said Varsity Blues football head coach Greg DeLaval. “They really stepped up and our defence really shut them down.”

Fifth-year receiver Cory Kennedy (Metcalfe, Ont.) added another major on a 50-yard reception before York could get on the scoreboard. Starting quarterback Nick Coutu (St. Catharines, Ont.) ran six yards for what would be the Lions only score of the game.

Blues kicker Andrew Lomasney (Toronto, Ont.) continued to shine in his rookie season, kicking three field goals in the second quarter, including a 35-yarder to put the Blues up 30-7 at the half.

Michael Prempeh (Toronto, Ont.) was on the receiving end of a Hamilton 19-yard pass for his first touchdown of the season, while Earl Johnson (Baltimore, MD) connected with second-year quarterback George Gretes (Toronto, Ont.) on an eight-yard pass for another Blues score. Stinson added his third touchdown of the afternoon with a three-yard run halfway through the third quarter.

Kennedy rounded out the scoring with a fumble recovery for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, increasing the Blues lead to 58-7. The Blues have not recorded a win of this magnitude since they defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs 63-0 on September 18, 1971.

“[It is] very satisfying that we put a game together where everything clicked,” said Kennedy. “We were a better team today and we took care of business.”

Co-players of the game recipients, Hamilton and Stinson continued to impress throughout the second half. Hamilton threw for 465 yards, going 22-of-32 with four touchdowns, while Stinson tallied a total of 208 yards receiving.

Lincoln Bryan (Toronto, Ont.) and Steve Persa (Aurora, Ont.) led the Blues defensively with five solo tackles apiece. Persa also recorded a team-high two sacks.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, September 20 when they host the undefeated Queen’s Gaels at 1 p.m. at Varsity Centre.
