NO. 2 HAWKS FLY PAST BLUES 6-3

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team fell 6-3 to the No. 2 Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday, November 30 in Waterloo, Ont.

Things didn’t start well for the Blues as the team got into some early penalty trouble. The Golden Hawks quickly capitalized on two powerplay opportunities to take a 2-0 lead after the first period.

Laurier quickly returned the favour, taking two penalties in the first minute of the second period and giving Toronto a five-on-three. Second-year forward Lindsay Hill (Ajax, Ont.) got the Blues on the board sending the puck through a scramble and into the net.

Less than a minute later, Hamilton, Ont. native Annie DelGuidice sent a booming slap shot over the glove of Laurier goaltender Liz Knox (Stoufville, Ont.) to tie the game 2-2.

The Golden Hawks regained momentum midway through the second period, scoring three unanswered goals in five minutes as the Blues found themselves down 5-2 going into the final frame.

DelGuidice would add her second goal of the game on another Toronto powerplay early in the third but it wasn’t enough as Laurier forward Lauren Barch (Burlington, Ont.) capped off her hat trick performance to help her team secure the 6-3 victory.

The Varsity Blues return to action in the new year when they travel to Montreal for the Theresa Humes Tournament, January 2-4, hosted by the Concordia University Stingers.
