JORGENSEN LEADS BLUES TO 4-2 VICTORY

Brenley Jorgensen (Kingston, Ont.) scored three powerplay goals in the third period as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team defeated the Waterloo Warriors 4-2 on Saturday, November 29 at Varsity Arena.

The forward line of Jorgensen, Emily Milito (Ottawa, Ont.) and Annie DelGuidice (Hamilton, Ont.) were responsible for all four of Toronto’s goals in the Blues second annual Think Pink game in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

In a game full of penalties, both teams got off to a slow start. After a scoreless first period, Kelly MacLean (St. George, Ont.) got the Warriors on the board, picking up a Julia Endicott (Toronto) rebound and walking around Blues goaltender Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.) to find the back of the net. Five minutes later, Milito scored on a Toronto powerplay to even things up going into the final frame.

Jorgenson tallied the go-ahead goal on a Blues five-on-three advantage eight minutes into the third period and added her second less than five minutes later, tapping in a loose puck in front of the net to give the Blues a 3-1 lead.

The Warriors began to rally and with two Toronto players in the penalty box, Caitlyn Brydges (Ariss, Ont.) sent a booming shot from the point through traffic to narrow Toronto’s lead to one. However, it was too little, too late for the Waterloo squad as Jorgensen skated down the wing and sent a trickling shot past Warriors goaltender Erica Bridgewater (Georgetown, Ont.) to secure her hat trick performance.

Jorgensen was named the Blues player of the game for her impressive three-goal performance. Milito scored one goal and added three assists, while assistant captain Annie DelGuidice (Hamilton, Ont.) had four assists in the victory.

The Varsity Blues travel to take on the No. 2 Laurier Golden Hawks tomorrow night (Nov. 30) in Waterloo, Ont. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
