The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team suffered a 2-0 loss against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, November 22 at Varsity Arena.
Laurier’s two goals in the first period would be all that they needed to come away with their 12th win of the season. Fifth-year veteran Andrea Bevan (Collingwood, Ont.) sent a point shot through traffic for the Laurier’s first goal eight minutes into the game. Five minutes later, Heather Fortuna (Kitchener, Ont.) picked up a rebound off an Alison Williams (Whitby, Ont.) point shot for what would be the last goal of the night.
The No. 7 Blues began to rally in the second and third periods, creating some good scoring chances. However, despite outshooting the Golden Hawks 19-7 in the third period, Toronto could not find a way past Laurier goaltender Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont.) and suffered their fourth loss the season.
First-year goaltender Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.) kept the game close for the Blues, making some spectacular saves throughout the game. Team captain Lyndsey Ryan (Ajax, Ont.) was named the Blues player of the game for her solid defensive effort throughout the night.
The Varsity Blues return home to host their second annual Think Pink game in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation against the Waterloo Warriors next Saturday, November 29 at Varsity Arena. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
