The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team fell 3-2 to the Western Mustangs on Saturday, November 2 at Varsity Arena.
Western gained momentum early, killing off a five-on-three in the first five minutes of the game. Western defenceman Kailey Hooker (Mississauga, Ont.) sent a shot towards the Toronto goal and Chantal Morais (Guelph, Ont.) was there to put in the rebound for the first goal of the game.
The Mustangs capitalized again on a power-play opportunity when Oshawa native Veronica Johnston’s weak point shot trickled through traffic past Blues goaltender Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.). Western was up 2-0 at the end of the first period.
The next goal wasn’t scored until 13 seconds into the third period, when Mustangs forward Ellie Seedhouse (Whitby, Ont.) took advantage of a five-on-three opportunity to give Western a three goal lead.
Toronto finally got on the board in the third period, scoring two power-play goals. Annie Delguidice (Hamilton, Ont.) sent a beautiful pass to Brenley Jorgensen (Kingston, Ont.), who deked out Western goalie Jessica Ulrich (Keswick, Ont.) and sent a backhand into the top corner of the net.
Just five minutes later, Bianca Mirabelli (Burlington, Ont.) skated in from the point and wrapped the puck around the net to a wide open Karolina Urban (Kamloops, B.C.) who made no mistake and scored the Blues second goal.
Despite some excellent chances, the Blues were unable to tie things up, and fell 3-2 to the Mustangs.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, November 8, when they travel across town to take on the York Lions. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
