TENNIS BLUES TOP MARAUDERS

The University of Toronto tennis teams defeated the McMaster Marauders at York University this weekend (Oct. 3-4). The men recorded a 5-2 win and the defending OUA champion women earned a 7-0 sweep.

In men’s singles action, fourth-year veteran Stan Szczepanski (Toronto, Ont.) led the Blues with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Graeme Morrissey (Hamilton, Ont.). Blues number two Rob Schmidt (London, Ont.) came away with 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 win over Keenan O’Young (Toronto, Ont.) while Rowan Thompson (Toronto, Ont.) won his match 7-5, 5-2. Arren Skandarajah (Toronto, Ont.) also won his singles match for the Blues.

The Blues men’s team swept in doubles action with close 8-7, 8-7 and 8-5 victories. The top-two Blues players, Szczepanski and Thompson, teamed up to beat the number one Marauders pair in a close 8-7 victory.

In women’s action, Blues number one Roxana Soica (Toronto, Ont.) defeated McMaster’s Leslie Bordenave, (Niagara Falls, Ont.) 6-0, 7-5 in the top women’s single match of the day. Daria Zakharchenko (Sochi, RUS) defeated Marauder’s number two Hally McLaren (Burlington, Ont.) 6-1, 6-1 while Blues number three Maia Kirk (Mississauga, Ont.) came away with 6-4, 6-1 victory over Kathleen Quinn (Fonthill, Ont.).

Ekaterina Alchits (Mississauga, Ont.), Emma Fergusson (London, UK) and Aisha Bhimla (Toronto, Ont.) also recorded victories in their singles matches.

Like their male counterparts, the Blues women also swept doubles action, winning 8-2, 8-3, and 8-4. Toronto’s top pair Soica and Zakharchenko led the way defeating the McMasters number one doubles team 8-2.

The Varsity Blues men’s team is currently tied for second place in the OUA with the Marauders while the women are sitting in fourth-place, two points behind the York Lions.
