The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s lacrosse team went 1-1 in weekend action, defeating the McGill Martletts 12-6 on Saturday, October 4 before falling 11-7 to the Western Mustangs on Sunday.
Carly Brown (Dryden, Ont.) and Tory Merrill (Orangeville, Ont.) led the Blues on Saturday, recording three goals apiece against the Martletts.
Toronto got off to an early lead when Taryn Grieder (Toronto, Ont.) scored just 29 seconds into the game. The Blues took a three-point lead in the first 12 minutes of the game with goals by Jeska Eedens (St. Catharines, Ont.) and another from Grieder.
McGill got on board with a goal by Bryanne Leeming (Hanover, N.H.) but the Blues replied as Brown scored two goals and Merrill added her first of the game, increasing the lead to 6-1. Things seemed under control for Toronto until a lapse in the Blues defence allowed the Martletts to score five unanswered goals in under three minutes to tie the game. The score was 6-6 at the half.
Toronto bounced back in the second half, shutting down the McGill offence entirely. The Blues dominated, recording six goals in the half to come away with the 12-6 victory.
On Sunday, Toronto’s leading scorers Merrill and Yoko Murphy (Toronto, Ont.) scored two goals each in a losing cause as the Blues fell 11-7 to the Western Mustangs. Sally Elabasery (Toronto, Ont.) scored her first goal of the season but the Blues trailed 8-4 at the half.
Despite their effort and determination, the Blues were unable to rally back in the second half and the Mustangs came away with two points.
With the loss, Toronto is tied with Western for third place in the OUA with only three regular season games remaining.
The Blues travel to London next weekend for their remaining three games. Toronto takes on the Guelph Grypons on Friday, October 10 at 7:00 p.m. and then play the McMaster Marauders and Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, October 11. Game times are 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.
